The following is a list of products that I recommend you switch to in order to decrease your trash production, limit your chemical usage, and increase your overall happiness with these beauties!
This post is not up-to-date. Please see The Essential Zero Waste Cleaning Supplies List for a more accurate list of all the products (and DIY) options you can use to clean your house!
ALL PURPOSE CLEANER - You can use vinegar with lemons (to help with the smell) as a disinfectant and cleaner for your bathroom and kitchen. Soak the vinegar in a jar of cut lemons for two-three weeks and then pour into a spray bottle for use.
CARPET STAIN REMOVER - You can pour club soda on the stain and blot with towels until the stain and soda are soaked up.
CLOGGED DRAINS - Avoid clogged drains by pouring 1/4 cup baking soda down the drain weekly. Rinse through with hot water.
LAUNDRY DETERGENT - Soap nuts are easy to use and can be composted after you're done with them! Horse chestnuts also have a similar reaction and may be found locally (and free on the side of the road!).
RUST REMOVAL - Mix salt with 1 tablespoon lemon juice until if forms a paste. Use a dry cloth to rub the paste on the rusted area and remove. This recipe can similarly be done with vinegar and salt.
SHOWER SCUM/SHOE POLISH/SEASONING PANS - Coconut oil can amazingly polish leather, season cast iron pans, and be used as a shower cleaner.
